Eros & Psyche

In ancient times, Eros, the mischievous son of Aphrodite, found himself ensnared by the beauty of Psyche, a mortal maiden whose radiance rivaled even that of the his own mother’s. Consumed by envy, Aphrodite decreed that her son must make Psyche fall for the most monstrous creature imaginable, unaware that love’s arrow is not easily guided.

As Eros was aiming his magical bow at this mortal beauty, he accidentally pricked himself, and fell instantly in love with the maiden. His own heart had defied the whims of his mother, and Eros knew there was nothing to be done but to play the game the Fates had thrown their way.

Every night Eros came to Psyche in darkness, but said that she must never see who he is. She blindly trusted the stranger, that had now become her husband, until one night the curiosity got the better of her. She lit a candle over her sleeping husbands body to see the most beautiful man imaginable, with downy white wings sprouting from his back, and she realized that her husband is none other than the god of love and passion- Eros. As she stared mesmerized by this newfound discovery, some of the wax from the candle dripped onto Eros’ sleeping form and woke him. He flew away from her- without faith, there can be no love.

Psyche prayed to Aphrodite to beg help in finding her lost husband. Still angry at this woman for her insufferable beauty, and having won over her own son’s heart, Aphrodite posed many fairty-tale-like tasks that seem insurmountable. Through these trials ,the depths of Psyche’s unrelenting love and dedication to Eros was tested. In the end, Psyche became an immortal, to live beside her divine husband with bond that transcended the realms of gods and mortals.

The tale of Psyche and Cupid is a tale woven with the threads of romance, betrayal, and the everlasting quest for belonging in a world filled with divine complexities. A story of a maiden who becomes a hero, and her husband who wakes her with a true loves kiss.
